A Classic Housewife is hosting the Back to (Home)School 2010 carnival!

This is perfect timing for me because I must make a couple of confessions.

  • We haven’t completed our last year yet.
  • I have barely even looked at curriculum for this year.
  • I am desperately in need of a schedule.

The truth is that I have become a very relaxed homeschooler this past year.  Partly because my husband was on a layoff and around the house a lot more.  Somehow keeping on track with math and science just didn’t seem as important as taking advantage of the time God had given us to strengthen our bonds as a family.

This is my favorite thing about homeschooling.  The freedom to allow God to lead and orchestrate every detail for you!

Back to the reason for this post and the Back to (Home)School Carnival.

Each day this week will focus on one area of preparing your homeschool for going Back to (Home)School. Today I get to share with you my goals for the upcoming year as well as what I am planning to use for our “curriculum”, but I will forewarn you that I don’t always stick with the plan. And I don’t always use traditional curriculum or teaching methods.

Kalene’s 10/11 School Plan
12th Grade College Student

You read that correctly. My 12th grader will begin her fourth semester of college classes this year. We haven’t decided exactly which classes she’ll take this time around until she has a meeting with her advisor, but we are thinking a math class for sure.

Since this is my last official year teaching my daughter I will be including several books that I have found to be valuable in becoming a strong woman of God.

For her 12th grade homeschool year:

Lifepac History & Geography Grade 12 – this covers topics like International Governments, United States Government, American Party System, History of Governments, The Christian and Government, Free Enterprise, Business and You, The Stock Market, Budget and Finance, Geography, and Review.

Lifepac Science Grade 12 – Physics: Will cover topics such as Kinematics, Dynamics, Work And Energy, Waves, Light, Static Electricity, Current Electricity, Magnetism, Atomic And Nuclear Physics, Kinematics To Nuclear Physics.

Money Matters Workbook for Teens by Larry Burkett

Thinking Like a Christian - This is a very in depth Biblical Worldview Study that we never finished last year.  This year I’m considering doing it all of us together as a family.

Lifepac British Literature – From Beowulf to Paradise Lost, from Pride and Prejudice to The Screwtape Letters, this comprehensive curriculum introduces your children to the rich heritage of British literature.

The Search For Significance – Book and workbook.

MathLifepac Consumer Math and College Algebra

Richie’s 10/11 School Plan
8th grade

Science – I’m still Undecided on this, so I’m waiting until I know, but it’s between two options. (Apologia General Science or Lifepac )
He’ll also read a lot of living books about scientists.

Around the World in 180 Days – A notebook approach to study the Geography, History, Culture, and Current Events of all seven continents.  We did half of this last year and he’ll finish it up this year.

The Story of the World Book Four and Activity Book : The Modern Age: From Victoria’s Empire to the End of the USSR.

Language Arts – This will consist of a combination of the following:

Write Source 2000 Skills Book, Spectrum Test Practice, and Megawords 7

Math -Life of Fred

Typing – online program

We’ll also add in a lot of living books for reading, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, art classes, piano, and anything else that comes along and seems like a good fit. I’m also hoping to do a few field trips this year since I hardly did any last year.

This plan is not set in stone and is subject to change should I feel so led.

Since we are a homeschooling family, we are really not going Back to School since school takes place all the time at home.

I am excited to share some of our homeschool adventures throughout this Back to (Home)School carnival to give you a glimpse into what out homeschool looks like.

But I will warn you that we are not you stereotypical homeschooling family that always finds their way on shows like WifeSwap.

Yes it’s true….We are Homeschooled!

Well maybe we are a little bit homeschoolers too since some of the homeschoolers stuff does apply to my family!

Guess what?? We haven’t finished yet, either, and I’m desperately in need of (sticking to) a schedule, too! ;)

I hadn’t really thought about when my kids are teenagers yet, but when you said something about including some books for your daughter valuable for becoming a strong woman of God, I though, “Oh, yeah! That’s a good idea!” =P I hope that when we get there I don’t get so focused on high school & college stuff to forget including some good “women of God” books, too!
