I came across an article that was published by The Washington Post that suggests that it is a lot more expensive to live in poverty.
I can remember growing up in a very poor home and wondering why some people seemed to have been able to figure things out and not live the way we did. I’ll admit that I questioned why my single mother couldn’t figure these things out too.
As an adult I can shop around at the cheapest stores, and spend time looking for ways to make my dollars stretch. One thing I don’t do that was common when I was growing up, is grocery shop at the corner store. We do have a corner grocery store now where things are sometime 3 and 4 times the cost of the same item from Kroger.
But I need to keep in mind that for my mom to go to Kroger in those days would have meant getting 4 children under 7 years old ready to go. Then calling a cab, or taking a bus miles away because we had no car or family to help. It was easier and possibly cheaper to walk a block away and buy only the few items she could afford rather than the other option.
Some things that I take for granted are not even an option for those who have little or no money.
So while I sit in my nice little home cutting out coupons and planning my grocery trips around where I can find the things I need for as cheap as I can, there are those who do not have this luxury.
And while it may be easy to judge and think that we have things so figured out, the truth is that no one chooses to live in poverty.
Just something to think about.
