I have struggled with my son in the area of reading ever since he was in kindergarten.
It’s not that he couldn’t read, because he learned pretty easily.
The real issue was that he has never liked reading.
This is beyond comprehensible to me since I love to read and would devour books when I was a kid.
A world without books is so sad to me.
It has always been my heart to see him really enjoy reading. I have tried being sneaky before by offering books I thought he would love. But my plan never worked, and they only turned into books he had to read.
Still, I refused to give up.
I knew that if I could just find the right book, he would fall in love with the character and story and realize what it was like to enter another world through a book.
I was looking on Amazon a couple of weeks ago for some books for my daughter who can’t get enough to read.
I ended up on a page that had all of the Percy Jackson Books
I had heard a few people talk about how great these books were and decided it wouldn’t hurt to pick them up. The worst thing that would happen is they would be added to the list of books my son had to read for school this year.
When they first arrived he really didn’t want anything to do with them. But that night, when I told him he could stay up in bed reading or go to sleep, he chose to open the book.
He hasn’t put it down!
It’s the first thing he does in the morning before he even gets out of bed, and it’s where he stays up reading all night long.
I am so happy to finally see him enjoy reading.

We are about halfway through the first one of the series, and my first grader is loving it! Of course, I’m reading it to him, but he begs me to read every single night!
If your son likes Percy Jackson, he might also like the Fablehaven series. It’s a little more on the fantasy side (with ogres, fairies, trolls, satyrs, etc.) and is pretty action packed.

Just popped in from “Works for Me Wednesday” to say these books are really good! I got them for my son when they first came out, and he also devoured them. I read them later and we had a quick conversation about some issues I had with the content, but they really drew him into reading. Thanks for sharing!

That’s wonderful! I’m an avid reader myself–my big thing as a kid was “The Bobbsey Twins.” You can’t go wrong if you’re kid loves to read.
My friend’s 10-year-old son loves these books, too. If my boys were still little, I’d probably pick them up for them, too!

Gosh, this post makes me smile! I am a teacher and I feel the same way…everyone can love reading, they just need to find the right books!
Boys can be especially challenging.
It is so wonderful when a reluctant reader discovers the world of books! My son loved these books also.

My daughter loves Percy Jackson too, and we are always having to get on the list at the library for the next book. We may just have to break down and buy them.
