I have always had a heart for children who are in need.

I’ve shared a little about the rough childhood I had in my Story of Grace posts which you can read here.

There was a time when I was younger that we had to live with a couple different families during a time when we found ourselves homeless.

My mom was a young struggling single mom with 4 kids and very little support at all.

Thankfully there were a couple families within our church family that were willing to let us stay with them.  We lived in an RV in the driveway of one of the families for a while until my mom could find a permanent place for all of us to live together.   Although I do not know what it means to physically sleep on the streets, I do know what it feels like to know that you have no place to call home.

I recently heard about the Grace Centers of Home 7th Annual Walk a Mile in my Shoes charity walk to raise money and awareness for the homeless children here in Michigan on June 2nd.

“In the state of Michigan, it has been estimated that there are over 100,000 homeless people on a given night. Of this statistic, 1 out of every 3 homeless persons is a child, at the average age of 7 years old”

This years goal is to raise a total of $95,000 to fund the following services for the Children’s Program:

  • Food clothing and shelter
  • Hands of Hope Child-Care Center
  • Free Medical and Dental Care
  • Summer & Fall Youth Camps
  • Children’s Learning Center
  • School Supplies, enrollment and tutoring
  • School sporting programs and activities

When you think of the homeless it is rarely a child that you see, but rather the dirty worn down street corner bum.  But the  reality is that homelessness affects every race, gender, and age group.

I have created a Saving Dollars and Sense Team and would ask that you prayfully consider participating with me in any way you can.

It is very easy to sign up through this special link.  Even if you can’t join in the actually walk you can register as a virtual walker and support this effort from your own home.  I also ask that you consider donating to the cause to help. Every little bit will help and you can donate directly to Grace Centers of Hope through this special link as well.

We are attempting to raise on behalf of our team, $500 which means if 500 of us donated $1 we would easily meet our goal!

The fast that God has chosen Isaiah 58

6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:
to loose the chains of injustice
and untie the cords of the yoke,
to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke?
7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—
when you see the naked, to clothe them,
and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?
8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness[a] will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
9 Then you will call, and the LORD will answer;
you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

“If you do away with the yoke of oppression,
with the pointing finger and malicious talk,
10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry
and satisfy the needs of the oppressed,
then your light will rise in the darkness,
and your night will become like the noonday.
11 The LORD will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.
