It’s summertime!
We all know to well that summertime always starts off new and exciting. Kids can’t wait to do everything that they have thought about doing all year. Its a chance to try new things. Everything is new for a couple of weeks.
But then the newness of summertime wears off.
And it isn’t too long before those carefree days turn into long, drawn out days, that run into one another without any distinction from one day to the next.
And the dreaded “B” Word starts flying around the house.
“I’m BORED!”
The quick fix for kids seems to be to turn to the TV, computer, or game systems. But as good parents we don’t want to see our kids killing their brain cells with the countless hours of emptiness that those options offer.
So here is the summertime boredom buster that works for me.
Plant a Garden.
Allow your child to plant their own gardens which they’ll be responsible for taking care of. Let them do all of the planning and work that’s involved in the entire process. This will give them hours of productive time outdoors. There are lessons and benefits that come from allowing your child to be in charge of their own gardens. There is all kinds of scientific observations they’ll have the opportunity to make. Plus they’ll learn about good nutrition.
So even though I am sure they’ll still want to check out the TV or play a video game, at least this activity will get them outside doing something fun and positive. Besides how many kids do you know who don’t like to play in the dirt?
