Lower Heat Costs

We have tried to be very conscience this year about how much we spend on our utilities. We try not to leave lights on when we leave the room. And we make sure to do things like wash full loads of laundry instead of half loads.

But the area that took the most work was the gas bill.

It has just been so cold this year. And the cost of gas has gone up a lot since last year. So it was necessary for us to try a few simple things to save on our gas bill.

We put plastic over the windows to keep the cold from finding it’s way in through the microscopic cracks. We also put our woodburning stove back in. It has helped a lot until recent with heat during the day.

There are a couple of other things we’ve done to stay warm this year. We always dress in layers. Hoodies have become a staple around here. Also we wear nice thick wool socks. These are the best.

But the thing that has helped the most has been our new digital thermostat.

I am able to program this thing to change the settings based on the time of day. This is great because I can have the heat set to 64 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night. Also, when I wake up in the morning and it is so cold I can’t hardly move, I can boost the setting up to 66 or 67 degrees to warm up the house. After a couple of hours it goes back to the original setting. So I can go for a long time before I realize the setting is back down.

But, usually during the day when we have our woodburner going the furnace won’t even come on at all.

These are just a few of the ways that this works for me to save money on heat.
