When I was pregnant with my first child I knew I wanted her to have a unique name.
I had a couple different names in mind, but I finally decided that her name would be Kalene. I had never in my life met another Kalene before, so I knew it would be perfect!
And it was definitely a name I had not heard anyone else called before, I knew it was what she was supposed to be named.
It never occurred to me that she might miss out on all the neat personalized things like her friends had.
Honestly I never gave it a second thought because I just didn’t realize that it would be something she would feel like she was missing out on.
Then one day we spent an incredible amount of time spinning the rack of personalized plastic little licence plates in a tourist trap souvenir store looking for her name.
But of course you will never find one with Kalene on it.
When all her other friends with popular names would come around her with their personalized blankets or bags, she would ask me why she had to have a strange name and couldn’t have a regular name like everyone else.
I tried to explain to her that she was not ordinary and that she required a name that fit her. I told her that when she was older this wouldn’t even matter to her, but that did not seem to take away the sadness I saw in her eyes.
To me, her name made her special because of the fact that it was unique.
But to her, it made the other kids special that they were able to have something she would never be able to enjoy.
Then one day we finally got a computer and internet service and I was able to find great customized gifts that I could put her name on.
This opened a whole new world to us and I made sure that Christmas was filled with gifts under the tree that I had her name put all over.
Never again would she be the girl with a weird name!
I could have avoided this whole situation had I just picked up some personalized baby keepsakes with her name on them from the beginning.
Then she would never have thought that she wasn’t as special as we always thought she was!
