I’ve been interested in doing an at home DNA test for some time now and recently had the opportunity to try the GPS Origins DNA Test and was pretty surprised by the results.
I have always been told that I am German from my dad’s side and Irish from my mom’s side.
Since I grew up with just my mom in my life, I naturally embraced by Irish roots more. In fact I am very proud of my Irish heritage.
I was a little worried that my results would show that everything I had known to be true about myself was really a lie and I would learn that I had some strange new ancestry instead.
I learned that I am indeed very much German and Irish…
But I also learned that I am SO MUCH MORE than that!

My ancestry included some results I would never have expected.
The neatest thing about the GPS Origins DNA test is that they take all of your DNA markers and use them to determine your ethnicity as well as the path your ancestors must have taken across the globe from what is known as “the cradle of civilization” to get to where your ancestors finally settled in modern day locations like Ireland and Germany.
Since I love learning about history and the migration of humans, I was fascinated to learn all of the little details of the day that would push a people group to move around.
How do you take an at home DNA Test?
When my test arrived I opened it immediately and saw that the instructions were clearly written on the inside of the envelope that contained 4 swabs, which all needed to be rubbed on the inside of my cheek for several seconds to gather the DNA from my cheek cells.
I placed all of the swabs full of my cheek cell DNA into a special envelope and then sent it all off to the GPS Origins DNA center and began the long wait.
It can take up to four weeks to get your results back.
Thankfully the results are delivered directly to your inbox, so you don’t have to wait for the results to be shipped back to you.
When you login to your account you’ll see a similar screen like this one.
Once you are on this screen, you can click on the green “View Results” button.

HOW IT WORKS
The GPS Origins™ test analyzes over 800,000 autosomal markers from your DNA to pinpoint your origins. It identifies when and where your DNA formed by matching the populations that came together to create a genetic line that eventually leads to you.
The GPS Origins™ test then traces the migration route of your DNA back to where it originated from and dated the age of your DNA signature. It does that for both your maternal and paternal lineages indicating where your DNA began. Your results are detailed in a report that reveals your ancestral origins.
Your personalized report identifies your top three Ancestral Origins (the Gene Pools or ancestral communities that contributed significant portions of your genetic makeup) and shows the percentages of DNA you inherited from each. The report is much more detailed than an estimate of ‘ethnicity’.
