How to Make a Kid’s Charcuterie Board
Full directions and measurements are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of the page.
This is a quick walkthrough of how it is made.
Step 1: Start by preparing your fruit and vegetables and slicing cheese if you want.
I cut my cheese into cubes and then opened the string cheese.
Step 2: With a shot glass, fold your pepperoni slices over the rim, overlapping and repeating with 8-10 slices.
Once you have them all on the glass, remove the meat from the glass.
This will expose a flower to place on the board.
Step 3: Start by framing your board with cheese, dipping sauces, BBQ sauce, etc.
Step 4: Then add fruit, crackers, and meats, and fill any holes with smaller items.
Once done, serve and enjoy.
Variations
You have endless options here. I will share a handful of ideas for customizing your snacking charcuterie board for kids.
Shapes of Cheese: For a fun design, consider getting smaller cookie cutters and cutting stars or other shapes out of the cheese.
Meats: You can use any type of deli meat for this recipe. Salami and pepperoni are the two best for making flowers.
Fruit Pizzas: Add some fruit pizza cookies to your board. They are fun and add a nice pop of color to the mix.
Candy: To add to your board, you can use candies like M&M’s, Skittles, gummy bears, chocolate-covered pretzels, or mini candy bars.
Fruit: Any type of fruit works, depending on the colors and themes you want—Kiwi, sliced apples, blueberries, orange slices, etc.
Mini Sandwiches: Make tiny sandwiches, whether they are tea sandwiches, mini peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ham and cheese pinwheels, etc. Have fun and use them in place of nuggets or in addition to them.
Fruit Dips: There are many recipes for fruit dips online. Consider adding that for a sweet pairing.
Snack Mixes and Nuts: You can use snack mixes or even nuts to help fill in smaller gaps on your snacking board. These would be great paired with crackers for a savory twist.
Tips For Making A Charcuterie Board
- Pick a board that is the right size for the amount of food you will use. You do not want empty space on your board.
- You will want to pick foods with a variety of textures, colors, and shapes. For a nice variety, reach for soft, chewy, and crunchy elements as well.
- Aim for easy-to-grab items that are kid-friendly and cut to the proper size.
- Group your items into sections on the board. Make sure that you have clean areas so everything is well-rested.
- If you see an empty spot, items like fruit or chocolate-covered raisins work great for adding to help hide the bare spots on the board.
FAQs
How far in advance can I prepare the charcuterie board?
You can do it a few hours to around 6-8 hours in advance.
I recommend not going over that, as the fruit and such can begin to break down.
Make sure you cover it tightly with plastic wrap, foil, or a lid and store it in the fridge.
What are some kid-friendly dips to include?
Make homemade ranch dressing, hummus, yogurt-based dips for fruit, caramel sauce, or a cream cheese-based spread for dipping.
How do I keep fruits like bananas from browning?
Toss in fresh lemon juice to prevent your bananas from browning too fast.
I recommend not placing them on the charcuterie board until you are ready to serve them.
