Ingredients Needed

Semi-Sweet Chocolate – I used semi-sweet chocolate chips here. This is going to offer that rich and deep chocolate flavor. You could use a chocolate bar you chop up into pieces if you prefer. Milk chocolate can be used as well if you want a more mellow chocolate flavor.

White Chocolate – To make the bark set up really quick I used a white chocolate bark. This of course could be swapped with white chocolate chips, bars, etc.

Oil – A little bit of oil is going to help create that glossy look and also help thin up the melted chocolate. Reach for an oil that doesn’t have any flavor. Canola or vegetable oil both work great or even coconut oil.

Peppermint Extract – Find this in the baking aisle or shop online and ship it to your home. Just make sure it is a food-grade extract and not an essential oil that is meant for diffusing in your home.

Peppermint Candy – Crushed peppermints on top add color and crunch. You can also reach for crushed candy canes if you prefer over peppermint candies.

Can I use other flavors besides peppermint?

Go right ahead and use any flavor of extract you would like. From almond to a sweet orange flavor. Feel free to experiment with flavors and find what you prefer.

Can I add nuts or other toppings to my peppermint bark?

You can decorate the top of your bark with any type of toppings. Nuts, sea salt, holiday sprinkles, dried coconut flakes, etc. Feel free to dress up your bark any way you would like. You do not have to use peppermint candies if you prefer something else.

Can I make this recipe vegan?

If you want a vegan bark, simply reach for vegan-friendly chocolate and candy that fits the vegan diet. Then you will assemble the same and then let the chocolate set, break, and enjoy the same.

Tips for Making

  • Placing your candy in a resealable bag and hitting the candy with a rolling pin makes it super easy to crush the candy quickly. I recommend making sure they are tiny pieces so it is easier to chew up.
  • Try to spread the chocolate in an even layer so you have the defined layers of semi-sweet and white chocolate.
  • A few drops of extract go a long way. Feel free to taste the chocolate and add more extract if you want a stronger peppermint flavor.
  • Make sure the semi-sweet chocolate has been set up before you spread it on the white chocolate. Otherwise, you will mix the two chocolates and won’t see the layers.
  • If you have food-grade peppermint oil instead of extract you can use that for the minty flavor.

Storing

Peppermint bark can be stored at room temperature for 2-3 weeks in a sealed container.

You will find that this is a Christmas treat that lasts quite a while.

Now if your home is warm, then I recommend refrigerating, to prevent it from melting.

How to Freeze Peppermint Bark

You can also freeze the peppermint bark for up to 6 months.

Just place it in a freezer bag or freezer container.

Then eat a little or all when you get a craving.

Eat straight from the freezer or let it thaw on the counter for a bit.
