How to Make Yogurt in an Instant Pot
Pour the whole milk into the instant pot insert.
Set the instant pot to “yogurt” to boil milk. Set the steam release handle to “venting”.
When the cycle finishes, the milk needs to reach 180°. Repeat the cycle if the milk does not reach this temperature.
Remove the insert from the instant pot and set aside to cool down. Watch the temperature until it cools to 110°.
A skim should appear on the top of the milk, this can be discarded.
Spoon out one cup of the cooled milk and add to the yogurt in a separate bowl.
Whisk to combine and add the mixture back to the milk in the instant pot insert. Whisk again.
Place the insert back in the instant pot. Lock the lid and press the “yogurt” setting for “normal” at 12 hours.
Place insert full of yogurt in the refrigerator, covered with a dish towel for 4 hours to set.
Scoop yogurt into clean canning jars or other containers.
Eat with your favorite fruit and granola, honey or enjoy plain.
Did you know that plain yogurt actually tastes just like sour cream? That’s right, we use it in all of our recipes that call for sour cream.
Is yogurt gluten free?
Plain yogurt, like this recipe, is gluten free. Just make sure that anything you add to your yogurt doesn’t contain gluten. Stick with vanilla, honey and fresh fruit and steer clear of granola.
How long does yogurt last?
Homemade yogurt can last up to two weeks in the fridge.
Can you freeze yogurt?
You can freeze yogurt to extend the length of time that it is safe to use. But a couple things you’ll want to be aware of. Freezing your yogurt will kill off some of the good bacteria, but it is still safe to eat.
It will also effect the texture of your yogurt. After you thaw it, you will notice that it will look a little less than creamy. I would use thawed yogurt in smoothies or other recipes that call for yogurt, but skip on eating it plain.
How to tell if yogurt is bad?
Yogurt will go rancid once it has gone bad. You can check if your yogurt has gone bad by the smell. It will have a strong sour smell that will let you know it is no longer fresh. If it smells like spoiled milk, toss it.
